Stop Flooding in Holland
In the aftermath of the Great North
Sea flood of 1953, Dutch engineers envisioned a new kind of barrier that would
withstand a 10,000-year storm. The long view inspired massive solutions: giant
floodplains instead of flood walls, and technologically sophisticated,
centralized monitoring and maintenance systems. Hurricanes continue to pound
the Netherlands, but there has been no Watersnoodramp since.
