Fifty years ago, IBM bet the farm on
the development of its System/360 mainframes. Big Blue spent $5.2 billion,
nearly twice its revenues, at one point issuing a new round of stock just to
meet payroll. But the high-stakes wager paid off. Introduced in 1964, the 360
made IBM the king of the computing industry for the next 15 years. The system
is the basis for every mainframe computer IBM has built since then.
