Western Europe
Western Europeans had fought over
the same ground for thousands of years. After World War II, Secretary of State
George Marshall wanted to break that endless cycle. The Marshall Plan doled out
$13 billion—5% of U.S. GDP—to 16 nations to reindustrialize, recapitalize, and
create mutual dependence through international trade. In four years European
economies revived, and peace has persisted among all 16 nations to this day.
